Abstract: In this note we discuss the features of a quadratic interaction potential for first order hyperbolic systems in one space dimension, aiming to suggest the need of defining a non local functional depending on the global wave structure of the solution in order to obtain a quadratic Glimm type functional for general hyperbolic systems.
